31
(7th Aug, 2004) Samba 3.0.6rc2 Available for Download
32
The second release candiate of Samba 3.0.6 is now available for download.
33 Previously released snapshots in this series were referred to as 3.0.5pre1
34 and 3.0.5rc1. These were later renamed as the 3.0.6 series due to the
35 3.0.5 security release. Samba 3.0.6rc2 can be downloaded in
36 gzipped format.
37 The GPG signature is for the uncompressed tarball.
38 There have been several bug fixes since the 3.0.4/5 release that
39 we feel are important to make available to the Samba community
40 for wider testings. This release is not intended for production
41 servers. Use at your own risk. All testing is very much appreciated.
42 Please refer to the Release Notes for
43 descriptions of the exact changes.

53
Two potential buffer overruns have been discovered in Samba >= 3.0.2
54 CAN-2004-0600,CAN-2004-0686).
55 One of these issues, CAN-2004-0686, also affects Samba 2.2.x.
56 Samba administrators are encouraged to review the 3.0.5
57 and 2.2.10 release notes
58 and upgrade any affected servers.
59 Samba 3.0.5 and 2.2.10 are identical to the previous release in each
60 respective series with the exception of fixing these issues.
61 Samba 3.0.5rc1 has been removed from the download area on Samba.org
62 and 3.0.6rc2 will be available later this week.

64
The 3.0.5 and 2.2.10 releases are available for download

72
(22nd Jul, 2004) Security Page Added to samba.org
73
A security release page has been added to samba.org. The page lists all security releases since Samba 2.0.0. An overview is provided by date of release and features a quick-glance overview of the security concern, affected releases, and download links. A link is provided to full release notes for those requiring more in-depth information.

75
A link to the page has been added to the navigation menu at the top of each page. Or go directly to the new Samba security page here.

80
(22nd Jul, 2004) End of Life for Samba 2.2 Announced
81
October 1, 2004 has been designated as the end-of-life (EOL)
82 for the Samba 2.2 codebase. Samba 2.2 has been in maintenance
83 mode since the release of v3.0.0 last September. With this announcement
84 it is being officially announced that there will be no further
85 2.2 releases (including security fixes) following the October 1 deadline.

93
(16th Jun, 2004) Welcome new Samba Team member Vance Lankhaar
94
Vance is joining the Samba Team as maintainer of the <a
95 href="http://build.samba.org">build farm. Vance has been
96 around Samba for a while now. He has previous contributions
97 to the build farm and has worked on Samba's documentation, and though
98 he didn't consider himself a C programmer at the time, he did build
99 the 'build options' support for smbd. We are glad to welcome Vance

107
The first preview release of Samba 3.0.5 is now available for
108 download in gzipped format.

117
ATTENTION! NEW BEHAVIOR!
119
Beginning with Samba 3.0.5pre1, clients supporting the UNIX
120 extensions to the CIFS protocol can create symlinks to
121 absolute paths which will be followed by the server. This
122 functionality has been requested in order to correctly support
123 certain applications when the user's home directory is mounted
124 using some type of CIFS client (e.g. the cifsvfs in the Linux
127
If this behavior is not acceptable for your production environment,
128 you can set wide
129 links = no in the specific share declaration in
130 the server's smb.conf. Be aware that disabling wide link support
131 out of a share in Samba may impact the server's performance due
132 to the fact that smbd will now have to check each path additional
133 times before traversing it.
135
RPMS for RedHat 8/9
