2111 Starting with the 3.0.23c release, the officially supported passdb
2112 backends (smbpasswd, tdbsam, and ldapsam) now operate identically
2113 with regards to the historical RID algorithm for unmapped users
2114 and groups (i.e. accounts not in the passdb or group mapping table).
2115 The resulting behavior is that all unmapped users are resolved
2116 to a SID in the S-1-22-1 domain and all unmapped groups resolve
2117 to a SID in the S-1-22-2 domain. Previously, when using the
2118 smbpasswd passdb, such users and groups would resolve to an
2119 algorithmic SID in the machine's own domain (S-1-5-XX-XX-XX).
2120 However, the smbpasswd backend still utilizes the RID algorithm
2121 when creating new user accounts or allocating a RID for a new
2122 group mapping entry.
2124 With the changes in the 3.0.23c release, it is now possible to
2125 resolve a uid/gid, name, or SID in any direction and always obtain
2126 a symmetric mapping. This is important so that values for smb.conf
2127 parameters such as "valid users" resolve to the same SIDs as those
2128 included in the local user's initial token.
2130 Most installations will notice no change. However, because
2131 an unmapped account's SID will now change even when using
2132 smbpasswd it is possible that any security descriptors on files
2133 previously copied from a Samba host to a Windows NTFS partition
2134 may now fail to give access. The workaround is to either manually

2455 ======================
2457 The user and group internal management routines have been
2458 rewritten to prevent overlaps of assigned Relative Identifiers
2459 (RIDs). In the past the has been a potential problem when either
2460 manually mapping Unix groups with the 'net groupmap' command or
2461 when migrating a Windows domain to a Samba domain using 'net rpc
2464 Unmapped users are now assigned a SID in the S-1-22-1 domain and
2465 unmapped groups are assigned a SID in the S-1-22-2 domain.
2466 Previously they were assign a RID within the SAM on the Samba
2467 server. For a DC this would have been under the authority of the
2468 domain SID where as on a member server or standalone host, this
2469 would have been under the authority of the local SAM (hint: net
2472 The result is that any unmapped users or groups on an upgraded
2473 Samba domain controller may be assigned a new SID. Because the
2474 SID rather than a name is stored in Windows security descriptors,
2475 this can cause a user to no longer have access to a resource for
2476 example if a file was copied from a Samba file server to a local
2477 NTFS partition. Any files stored on the Samba server itself will
2478 continue to be accessible because Unix stores the Unix gid and not
2479 the SID for authorization checks.
2481 A further example will help illustrate the change. Assume that a
2482 group named 'developers' exists with a Unix gid of 782 but this
2483 user does not exist in Samba's group mapping table. it would be
2484 perfectly normal for this group to be appear in an ACL editor.
2485 Prior to 3.0.23, the group SID might appear as
2486 S-1-5-21-647511796-4126122067-3123570092-2565. With 3.0.23, the
2487 group SID would be reported as S-1-22-2-782. Any security
2488 descriptors associated with files stored on an NTFS disk partition
2489 would not allow access based on the group permissions if the user
2490 was not a member of the
2491 S-1-5-21-647511796-4126122067-3123570092-2565 group. Because this
2492 group SID not reported in a user's token is S-1-22-2-782, Windows
2493 would fail the authorization check even though both SIDs in some
2494 respect referred to the same Unix group.
2496 The current workaround is to create a manual domain group mapping
2497 entry for the group 'developers' to point at the
2498 S-1-5-21-647511796-4126122067-3123570092-2565 SID.
2504 The "passdb backend" parameter no long accepts multiple backends
2505 in a chaining configuration. Also be aware that the SQL and XML
2506 based passdb modules have been removed in this release. More
2507 information of external support for a SQL passdb module can be
2508 found at http://pdbsql.sourceforge.net/.

2514 The default mapping entries for groups such as "Domain Admins" are
