6 <para>This option is used by the programs in the Samba
7 suite to determine what naming services to use and in what order
8 to resolve host names to IP addresses. Its main purpose to is to
9 control how netbios name resolution is performed. The option takes a space
10 separated string of name resolution options.</para>
12 <para>The options are: "lmhosts", "host",
13 "wins" and "bcast". They cause names to be
14 resolved as follows:</para>
18 <para><constant>lmhosts</constant> : Lookup an IP
19 address in the Samba lmhosts file. If the line in lmhosts has
20 no name type attached to the NetBIOS name (see the <ulink
21 url="lmhosts.5.html">lmhosts(5)</ulink> for details) then
22 any name type matches for lookup.</para>
26 <para><constant>host</constant> : Do a standard host
27 name to IP address resolution, using the system <filename moreinfo="none">/etc/hosts
28 </filename>, NIS, or DNS lookups. This method of name resolution
29 is operating system depended for instance on IRIX or Solaris this
30 may be controlled by the <filename moreinfo="none">/etc/nsswitch.conf</filename>
31 file. Note that this method is used only if the NetBIOS name
32 type being queried is the 0x20 (server) name type or 0x1c (domain controllers).
33 The latter case is only useful for active directory domains and results in a DNS
34 query for the SRV RR entry matching _ldap._tcp.domain.</para>
38 <para><constant>wins</constant> : Query a name with
39 the IP address listed in the <link linkend="WINSSERVER"><parameter moreinfo="none">
40 wins server</parameter></link> parameter. If no WINS server has
41 been specified this method will be ignored.</para>
45 <para><constant>bcast</constant> : Do a broadcast on
46 each of the known local interfaces listed in the <link linkend="INTERFACES"><parameter moreinfo="none">interfaces</parameter></link>
47 parameter. This is the least reliable of the name resolution
48 methods as it depends on the target host being on a locally
49 connected subnet.</para>
53 <para>Default: <command moreinfo="none">name resolve order = lmhosts host wins bcast</command></para>
55 <para>Example: <command moreinfo="none">name resolve order = lmhosts bcast host</command></para>
57 <para>This will cause the local lmhosts file to be examined
58 first, followed by a broadcast attempt, followed by a normal
59 system hostname lookup.</para>
61 <para>When Samba is functioning in ADS security mode (<command moreinfo="none">security = ads</command>)
62 it is advised to use following settings for <parameter moreinfo="none">name resolve order</parameter>:</para>
64 <para><command moreinfo="none">name resolve order = wins bcast</command></para>
66 <para>DC lookups will still be done via DNS, but fallbacks to netbios names will
67 not inundate your DNS servers with needless querys for DOMAIN<0x1c> lookups.</para>
